There’s a good chance you’ve heard of retinol as a solution to both stubborn acne and early signs of aging. Dermatologists and skin experts agree that retinol is an effective ingredient. Besides working wonders on fine lines and wrinkles and improving the skin’s texture, the ingredient used can also reduce scarring and enlarged pores.
Retinol serum: how often and when to use it
In order to use retinol serum effectively, balance is crucial, especially for beginners. As a starting point, we recommend four to five drops twice a week in the evening.
Apply the serum evenly to your face and neck. Avoid applying it to the eye or lip area and make sure your skin is freshly cleansed and dry before applying it.
If your skin responds well to the retinol serum in the first week, you can gradually increase the usage to give your skin a chance to adapt.
From the third week onward, apply the retinol serum every night instead of on alternate days. Space out your serum application and/or reduce the amount if your skin experiences discomfort.
It’s best to skip the retinol serum the day before you exfoliate if you use an exfoliating product several times a week. The process of exfoliation can be abrasive and harsh on the skin, so you don’t want to make matters worse by making your skin more sensitive.
The use of retinol can make your skin more susceptible to sun damage. Retinol is safe to use year-round, but you should apply sunscreen the following morning if you’ve applied it the night before. Sunscreen should be applied daily, of course!
