How Singaporeans Can Save More Money With Online Shopping: 15 Practical Tips
Share on WhatsAppShare on Facebook

Online shopping has become part of everyday life in Singapore. From buying groceries and household essentials on Shopee to booking attractions through Klook, comparing hotel prices on Trip.com, ordering meals through Grab, and shopping for everyday items on FairPrice Group’s platforms, there are plenty of ways to shop without leaving home. However, convenience can come at a cost. Flash sales, free-shipping vouchers, limited-time deals and personalised recommendations can tempt shoppers to spend more than they originally planned.

The good news? You do not need to stop shopping online to save money. The key is learning how to compare prices, stack eligible discounts, choose the right payment methods and recognise when a deal is genuinely worthwhile. Whether you are a student, working professional, young parent or budget-conscious household, these practical online shopping tips in Singapore can help you stretch your dollar further.

In this guide, we explore how Singaporeans can save more money with online shopping, including ways to save on Shopee purchases, travel bookings, groceries, food delivery and digital payments. You will also discover lesser-known money-saving strategies, common mistakes to avoid and answers to frequently asked questions about online shopping in Singapore.

1. Compare Prices Before Buying on Shopee and Other Online Shopping Platforms

One of the easiest ways to save money online in Singapore is to compare the final price of an item across different platforms before checking out.

A product may look cheaper on Shopee than on another marketplace, but the price difference could disappear after shipping fees, platform charges or payment conditions are included.

How to compare prices effectively

Before making a purchase:

  • Search for the same product on Shopee, Lazada and other relevant retailers.
  • Compare the exact model, size, colour, quantity and specifications.
  • Check whether shipping is free or subject to a minimum spend.
  • Look for eligible store vouchers, platform vouchers and cashback offers.
  • Read recent customer reviews and check the seller’s ratings.
  • Compare the final checkout price rather than the advertised price.

For branded electronics, skincare, household appliances and other higher-value products, also check the brand’s official store or authorised retailers. A slightly higher price may be worthwhile if it includes a valid warranty, easier returns or better after-sales support.

Money-saving tip: Keep a note of the usual prices of products you buy regularly. This makes it easier to recognise a genuine discount instead of relying on a large percentage-off label.

2. Make the Most of Shopee Vouchers and Sale Events

Shopee is a familiar shopping destination for Singaporeans looking for fashion, electronics, beauty products, home accessories and everyday essentials. Its vouchers and promotional campaigns can help reduce spending, provided you use them strategically.

How to save more money on Shopee Singapore

Step 1: Collect eligible vouchers before checkout. Check available store vouchers, platform discounts and free-shipping promotions. Read the minimum-spend requirements and any product exclusions.

Step 2: Compare voucher combinations. Some promotions can be combined, while others cannot. Check the checkout page to see which eligible combination gives you the lowest final price.

Step 3: Use sale events selectively. Campaigns around 9.9, 10.10, 11.11 and 12.12 may feature discounts, but not every product will be cheaper during these periods.

Step 4: Consolidate planned purchases when worthwhile. If you already need several items from the same seller, combining them may help you meet a voucher threshold or reduce delivery costs. Do not add unnecessary products just to qualify.

Step 5: Check the final amount before paying. A voucher that saves $5 on a $60 order is not necessarily better than an alternative offer that saves $4 on an item you genuinely need.

For example, if a household item costs $30 and you have an eligible $5 voucher, your price becomes $25 before any other applicable charges. If the same item normally sells for $24 elsewhere, the voucher does not represent the best deal.

The principle is simple: use Shopee vouchers to reduce the cost of planned purchases, not to justify purchases you would otherwise avoid.

Rewards Credit Card as a Miles Card

3. Use Cashback and Credit Card Rewards Without Overspending

Cashback, reward points and promotional rebates can provide additional savings on everyday purchases. However, the actual benefit depends on eligibility, spending caps, exclusions and payment conditions.

How cashback helps Singaporean shoppers

Suppose you spend $100 on eligible purchases and receive 3% cashback. You earn $3 back, assuming the transaction qualifies and the reward is credited.

That is a useful saving, but it does not make an unnecessary $100 purchase worthwhile.

To maximise online shopping savings in Singapore:

  • Check whether your payment method earns rewards for the merchant and transaction type.
  • Understand monthly cashback caps and minimum-spend requirements.
  • Review excluded transactions, including any applicable wallet top-ups or bill payments.
  • Compare annual fees and other costs against the rewards you realistically earn.
  • Pay your credit card balance in full by the due date to avoid interest charges.
  • Avoid opening additional payment accounts solely for a small promotional benefit unless the overall value justifies the effort.

You can also check whether your bank, card issuer or payment provider has an active merchant-specific promotion.

A useful rule: Calculate cashback based on money you were already planning to spend. Treat rewards as a bonus rather than an excuse to increase your shopping budget.

4. Save Money on Groceries With FairPrice and Online Grocery Shopping

Groceries are a recurring expense, making them an excellent area to practise consistent savings.

Online grocery shopping can help Singapore households compare prices, plan meals and avoid impulse purchases. Platforms and services such as FairPrice Online, RedMart and other grocery delivery options may offer different prices, promotions and delivery arrangements.

Practical ways to reduce grocery spending

  • Plan your meals: Prepare a weekly meal plan before adding items to your cart.
  • Compare unit prices: Check the price per 100g, kilogram, litre or individual item instead of comparing package prices alone.
  • Buy store brands where suitable: House-brand staples may cost less than national brands while meeting your needs.
  • Use promotions for regular essentials: Take advantage of discounts on products you already use, especially shelf-stable goods.
  • Reduce food waste: Check your fridge and pantry before ordering more ingredients.
  • Compare delivery fees: A discounted grocery order may become less attractive after delivery charges.
  • Be careful with bulk buying: Only buy larger quantities if you can use them before they expire.

For example, a 1kg pack of rice may have a lower unit price than a smaller bag. But if you have limited storage or rarely cook at home, the larger pack may not be the most practical purchase.

When comparing online grocery shopping options in Singapore, calculate the cost of the complete basket, including delivery fees, discounts and any minimum-order requirements.

5. Use Trust and Other Digital Banking Tools to Manage Spending

Digital banking and payment apps can make everyday transactions more convenient, but they can also make spending feel less noticeable.

Trust Bank and other financial service providers may offer eligible card rewards, promotional benefits or account features that help users manage their money. The specific benefits depend on the product, current terms and your eligibility.

How to use digital banking more effectively

  1. Set a monthly shopping budget. Separate essential spending from discretionary purchases.
  2. Review transaction records regularly. Identify how much you spend on shopping, food delivery, transport and entertainment.
  3. Check promotional terms. Confirm reward rates, caps, exclusions and qualifying payment methods before relying on an offer.
  4. Use spending alerts where available. Notifications can help you notice when you approach your budget.
  5. Keep your payment methods manageable. Too many cards, accounts and promotional conditions can make spending harder to track.

Trust should be treated as one possible option rather than an automatic source of savings. Compare its current benefits with other suitable products, and consider convenience, security and account terms as well as rewards.

The goal is not to collect the most financial apps. It is to build a simple system that makes your spending easier to understand and control.

Have you tried Trust Bank’s card yet? If not yet, sign up with our referral code WV2GG6CB to receive an additional FREE $10 in Trust Bank App.

6. Save on Travel Bookings With Klook and Trip.com

Travel is another area where online comparison can make a noticeable difference to your budget. Singaporeans booking holidays, weekend activities and staycations can compare flights, hotels, attractions and transport options across different platforms.

Klook is commonly used to discover attractions, activities, experiences and selected transport services. Trip.com offers travel booking services, including hotels, flights and other travel-related products.

How to save money with Klook

  • Compare attraction ticket prices with the venue’s official website.
  • Check whether a package includes admission, transport or additional benefits.
  • Look for eligible promotional codes or app-exclusive offers.
  • Compare individual tickets against bundled packages.
  • Check cancellation policies, booking dates and redemption requirements.
  • Confirm whether the advertised price includes all mandatory charges.

How to save money with Trip.com

  • Compare hotel rates across different room types and cancellation conditions.
  • Check whether taxes and other mandatory charges are included in the displayed total.
  • Compare refundable and non-refundable bookings carefully.
  • Review the hotel’s official website for potentially different rates or benefits.
  • Check flight baggage allowances, seat fees and change conditions.
  • Compare the final price after any eligible coupons or rewards.

Is it always cheaper to book through an app?

No. An app may offer a promotional price, but the official provider may offer a better package, flexible cancellation or extra benefits.

Imagine two hotel bookings with similar advertised prices. One includes breakfast and free cancellation, while the other charges separately for breakfast and has stricter cancellation rules. The first booking may offer better overall value even if its initial price is slightly higher.

For travel, compare the total trip cost, not just the ticket or room rate. Include transport, baggage, meals, admission fees and other expenses that affect your actual budget.

7. Reduce Food Delivery Spending With Grab

Food delivery apps such as Grab can be convenient when you are busy, working late or unable to cook. However, frequent orders can quietly increase monthly expenses through delivery fees, service charges and add-ons.

How to save money when ordering through Grab

  • Compare the delivery price with the restaurant’s takeaway or dine-in menu where practical.
  • Check the total cost after delivery fees and service charges.
  • Use eligible vouchers for meals you were already planning to order.
  • Look for pickup options when they are convenient and cheaper.
  • Avoid adding unnecessary drinks, sides or desserts just to reach a minimum order value.
  • Compare meal bundles against ordering items separately.
  • Set a weekly food delivery budget and review it at the end of the week.

For instance, a meal advertised at $12 may cost more after additional charges. If a pickup option is available at a lower total price, collecting the order yourself could be more economical.

A useful strategy is to reserve delivery for situations when its convenience is genuinely valuable. For everyday meals, meal planning, home cooking and affordable takeaway options can help balance your budget.

8. Use Price Tracking and Wish Lists to Avoid Impulse Purchases

Not every online deal requires an immediate decision. For non-essential products, waiting can be one of the simplest ways to save money.

Try the 24-hour rule

When you see something you want but do not urgently need, add it to your wish list and wait 24 hours before purchasing. For expensive items, consider waiting several days or until your next budget review.

During that time, ask yourself:

  • Do I genuinely need this item?
  • Do I already own something that serves the same purpose?
  • Is the price competitive with other sellers?
  • Would I still buy it if there were no discount?
  • Does this purchase fit within my monthly budget?

You can also keep a simple price record for frequently purchased items. Compare current listings with previous prices rather than assuming that every sale offers the lowest available rate.

This approach is particularly useful for fashion, gadgets, home décor, skincare and hobby-related purchases.

The aim is not to eliminate enjoyable spending. It is to make sure that your money goes towards things you actually value.

9. Combine Discounts Carefully Instead of Chasing Every Promotion

Voucher stacking can be effective, but the rules differ across merchants, payment providers and promotional campaigns.

Before checking out, look for a combination of:

  • Store vouchers
  • Platform vouchers
  • Eligible bank or card promotions
  • Cashback offers
  • Free-shipping vouchers
  • Loyalty programme rewards

Not every combination will be allowed, and some promotions may require a minimum spend or specific payment method.

How to calculate the real savings

Use this simple formula:

Final cost = Item price + delivery fees and other charges − applicable discounts

To estimate your net savings, compare the final cost against the normal price of the same item under comparable conditions.

For example:

ItemAmount
Listed price$50
Eligible store voucher−$5
Delivery fee+$2
Final cost$47

Your immediate saving is $3 compared with the original $50 price, before considering any other applicable rewards. If another retailer sells the same product for $45 with free delivery, the alternative is still cheaper.

Always compare like-for-like products and use the final checkout amount when deciding where to buy.

10. Know When Free Shipping Is Not Actually Free

Free shipping is attractive, particularly for low-cost items. However, some promotions require shoppers to spend a minimum amount before they qualify.

Suppose your basket contains a $12 item and delivery costs $3. If you need to spend another $18 to qualify for free shipping, adding products you do not need could increase your total spending unnecessarily.

A better approach is to ask:

  • Do I need other items from this seller?
  • Can I combine this order with a planned purchase?
  • Is the delivery fee lower than the cost of the extra items?
  • Can I find the same product with cheaper shipping elsewhere?

Free shipping is useful when it reduces the cost of a purchase you already intended to make. It is not a saving if it encourages you to buy unnecessary products.

11. Use Memberships and Loyalty Programmes Only When They Pay Off

Remain Stress FreeMemberships and loyalty programmes can provide discounts, points, vouchers or other benefits. However, paid subscriptions and annual memberships are only worthwhile when the benefits exceed the costs.

Before signing up, consider:

  • How frequently will you use the service?
  • Are the discounts available on products you actually buy?
  • Is there a minimum spend for each benefit?
  • Do rewards expire?
  • Does the membership renew automatically?
  • Are there cheaper alternatives without a subscription?

For example, a paid delivery membership may be useful for someone who regularly orders eligible deliveries. For someone who orders only once or twice a month, paying for the membership may not make financial sense.

Review your subscriptions every few months and cancel those that no longer provide enough value.

12. Protect Yourself From Fake Deals and Online Shopping Scams

Saving money should never come at the expense of security.

Singapore shoppers should remain cautious about suspiciously low prices, fake seller accounts, phishing messages and payment requests that occur outside a platform’s official checkout process.

Online shopping safety checklist

  • Buy from reputable sellers and verify product authenticity where relevant.
  • Read recent reviews and look for consistent, credible feedback.
  • Avoid clicking suspicious links in messages claiming that you have won a prize or must pay an unexpected fee.
  • Never disclose your passwords, banking credentials or one-time passwords to sellers.
  • Use the platform’s official payment process where applicable.
  • Review refund, return and warranty policies before purchasing.
  • Keep order confirmations and payment records.
  • Contact the platform or your bank through official channels if you suspect fraud.

Be particularly careful when a seller asks you to transfer money directly to secure a special price or claims that an urgent payment is needed to release a parcel.

A genuine bargain should withstand basic checks. If an offer seems unusually attractive and the seller pressures you to act immediately, take a step back before paying.
